Jon Lester somehow ended up with a five game suspension for hitting Carl Crawford with a breaking ball. For those keeping track at home, that’s only one game less than James Shields who threw the fastball that incited the actual brawl, and threw the first punch of the melee. Lester got the same suspension as Jonny Gomes who came barreling out of the dugout like a maniac and threw punches as if it was a UFC fight. Lester was none too pleased as he questions the logic of the suspension.
2003 American League Rookie of the Year, Angel Berroa, made his debut on Sunday after being traded to the Dodgers. I’m not too sure why the Dodgers would go after a guy who was stuck behind Tony Pena Jr. (and his .155 batting average) on the shortstop depth chart for the Royals. At least they aren’t taking on the Berroa’s atrocious $4 million/year salary for his Triple-A quality (at best) talent.
Ken Rosenthal mulls over possible trades before baseball’s July 31 deadline. Is a Brian Roberts for Rickie Weeks swap a realistic possibility? Could Adam Dunn dawn a Red Sox uniform?
The Tampa Bay Rays found themselves in the midst of even more drama on Sunday when things got heated between Matt Garza and his batterymate, Dioner Navarro. It began as an argument on the mound then continued in the dugout and spilled into the tunnel. And of course, the cameras were running during the whole debacle.
