The Oakland A’s Opened a New Chapter of Moneyball in 2008

The uncanny ability of the Oakland A’s to be so successful while spending so little money has been nothing short of amazing. Books have been written about his unconventional style. Execs from around the league have modeled their strategies after Beane’s brilliance in Oakland. Even as the eyes of baseball watch their [...]

Monday Night Baseball: Liriano’s Recovery, Swisher’s Hot Bat, the Red Hot Rays, and Joel Zumaya’s Gas

Francisco Liriano Watch: After back-to-back gawd awful starts, Liriano bounced back nicely and put together a masterful performance last night, picking up the 2-1 win against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (The names alone are enough to love Minor League Baseball. No?). Liriano scattered four hits over seven innings, and did not allow [...]

¡Beisbol es loco! (and other notes from around the league)

According to Vlad Guerrero, “beisbol es loco.” After watching the Angels and Dodgers showdown in La-La Land on Saturday night, that sentiment is a tough one to argue. Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo combined to throw a no-hitter, but the Angels still lost the game! This is the fifth time in baseball [...]

Francisco Liriano Watch, 6/20/08: One Step Forward and Two Steps Back

Just when Francisco Liriano looked like he was on the fast track to regaining his dominance in 2008, he turned a very unimpressive start against the Indianapolis Indians on Friday. It’s great to see that he is still boasting a great strikeout-to-walk ratio (7 Ks: 1 BB on Friday), but it appears that he [...]

Francisco Liriano Watch, 6/15/08

Francisco Liriano delivered his third consecutive win on Sunday against Cincinnati Reds affiliate, the Louisville Bats.  Liriano threw 95 pitches over 7.1 innings while allowing 2 earned runs while striking out five.  The 24 year old southpaw showed excellent command, as he did not yield a single walk during his outing for the first time [...]

Francisco Liriano Watch, 6/11/08

Francisco Liriano was brilliant in his 10th minor league start of the season on Tuesday night.  Facing the Tampa Bay affiliate, Durham Bulls, Liriano took the ball for six innings, allowing only one earned run while scattering six hits (none for extra bases) en route to his second victory of the 2008 season.
By racking up [...]

Mounding Observations

Pitching for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, Francisco Liriano earned his first win in professional baseball since July 23, 2006. This was by no means his best outing though. He surrendered a 3-run homer in the first inning and issued 4 walks over 6 innings pitched. It’s very encouraging to see 7 [...]

Baseball’s Amateur Draft on Thursday

Major League Baseball’s Amateur Draft takes place on Thursday. Best name in the draft, by far: Shooter Hunt. I need to see the birth certificate. I wonder if his parents like hunting…
Here are a few mock drafts for you to enjoy:

Down on the Farm: Francisco Liriano Watch

Francisco Liriano turned in his most promising outing of the season on Saturday against the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees (why they need two hometowns, I have no idea). Liriano didn’t factor into the decision, but he looked great nonetheless. Over 6 and 1/3 innings, the man once tagged as “The Franchise” within the [...]
